Past perfect :the grammatical form used for an action that had already finished when another action happened. It is made with "had" and a past participle:
"I had just cooked" is an example of the past perfect, and "I had just been cooking" is an example of the past perfect continuous.
More examples
'I had already eaten' is an example of the past perfect.
'She hadn't seen him' is an example of the past perfect.

by cambridge the past simple mean: form of a verb used to describe an action that happened before the present time and is no longer happening. It is usually made by adding -ed:
The past simple of 'cook' is 'cooked'.
More examples
The past simple of 'understand' is 'understood'.
The past simple of 'go' is 'went'.
note : There are (irregular) verbs, which must be memorized in the past tense, like the previous example

According to cambrige past continuous to talk about events and temporary states that were in progress around a certain time in the past.
